DALTON ODIYO

Authored by

My name is Dalton Odiyo. A contemporary Fashion stylist and Creative Director based in Nairobi, Kenya. I tell my fashion stories and do work research that has systematically explored Africa.

My work aims to connect different places plus to help understand the ancient fashion techniques that have been used and preserved across objects, design, and craft, using style and fashion as the ultimate canvas. I look to the notion of connectivity and bringing together multicultural ideas to create a free-minded body of work.

1.   Tell us about a particular project, and what inspired it?

I love all my projects . But one of my special works is a campaign for Yoshita 1967 by Anil Padia. The body of work is a tribute to Anil Padia’s family, their stories and memories that were never fully lived. I loved the aspect of storytelling through time, craft and giving voice to things that couldn’t be expressed.

2.   How did you get started? Also, what is your creative process like?

My creative journey began in 2020 when my collective, 199x and Ubran Pitchaz, collaborated on fashion projects. The body of work we created during that period, which was shot amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, gained significant recognition and was featured in Vogue magazine. This achievement served as a clear indication that I had the potential to share our stories on a global scale. For the creative process, I might start with an idea or a reference. I take my time, sometimes weeks or even months, to transform the idea into its final form.

3.   Do you have any favourite projects and what makes it special to you?

I would discuss my latest body of work with Ikeno. What makes it special is that my collective and I have been collaborating with Ikeno’s Creative Director, Jemima Bornman for quite some time now. As we’ve been working together, we’ve consistently delivered the Lord’s work on projects, which is truly remarkable.

4.   Do you have any upcoming projects you would want to share with us ?

I have a couple of upcoming works that I’d be happy to share once they’re ready but my next project drop is an editorial campaign featuring a Mumbai,India based brand.
