SLUM is a young and gifted fashion designer from Ketu, Lagos, Nigeria. Famous for his aesthetically pleasing designs, attention to detail, and passion for storytelling, SLUM is very intentional about his craft. In this interview, SLUM shares his inspirations, motivations, and his path to becoming one of the best fashion designers in the country.

Why fashion design and what drives you to create such distinctive designs?
I've had an interest in fashion design since I was young. I used to observe my mom sew and make clothes for me, and that inspired me to start making my designs. I am propelled by the desire to create unique and aesthetically pleasing outfits that tell a story. I always want my designs to be outstanding and make a statement.
That's interesting. Who are your biggest inspirations and influences in the fashion industry?
There are so many designers that I respect and draw inspiration from, but my top influences are Young Lord, Yinka Ash, Mowalola, Ye, Richard Stark, and Matthew Williams. They are all super-talented designers who have created extraordinary styles, and they inspire me to keep breaking boundaries.

What is one piece of advice that you live by and how has it changed your life?
It is taking my time in my craft and everything I do. This reminds me to be patient and focus on the quality of my craft rather than hurrying to create designs quickly. I love to take my time and produce the best possible quality of work I can.
So far, what moment has been your greatest as a designer?
My greatest achievement was participating in the StreetSouk 2021 event. It felt so exhilarating to see multiple people wear my designs and look great in them. It was such a validating moment for my work.

What motivates you to continue creating new designs, and where do you draw inspiration from?
My greatest motivation is that I always strive to do better. I draw inspiration from various places, but my favorite is the beach. The ocean, the waves, and the sand are so calming, and they inspire me to create something beautiful.
Do you have any favorite fashion houses you'd like to collaborate with in the future?
I admire Givenchy and YZY the most. They have a unique style that I find very fascinating. In the future, I would love to collaborate with them.
In five years, where do you see SLUM?
I see myself being in the same category as the best designers in the world. My goal is to continue creating spectacular designs, and expanding my brand globally.
If you could advise any aspiring fashion designers right now, what will you tell them?
Simple. Take your time with your craft, make the best of it, and prosper. Don't rush the creative process, and always focus on producing the best work. Keep pushing yourself, and never give up on your dreams.
