Miss Universe Kenya 2026 concluded in Nairobi on Saturday night, with Jean Ojiro crowned the country's newest titleholder and set to represent Kenya at the international Miss Universe competition. Ojiro emerged victorious following the national finale, with Mercy Awuonda named first runner-up and Myra Mburu taking second runner-up. Organizers confirmed that no special awards were presented during this year's competition, choosing instead to focus on selecting Kenya's representative for the global stage.

As Kenya's official preliminary to the Miss Universe competition, Miss Universe Kenya is part of the wider international pageant system that sees countries across the world – including Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa, the Philippines and India – crown delegates to compete for the Miss Universe title. Beyond the competition itself, the pageant has increasingly positioned itself as a platform for leadership, advocacy and cultural representation.

According to Kevin Bellwood, National Director of Miss Universe Kenya under Crown Culture Africa, Ojiro distinguished herself through her consistency, authenticity and sense of purpose throughout the competition. "...From the preliminary stages to the final night, she demonstrated strong communication skills, confidence under pressure, and a grounded sense of identity," Bellwood told Deeds Magazine. "What truly set her apart was not just her stage presence, but her ability to connect her personal story with a broader vision of service and impact."

Ojiro now joins a growing list of women who have represented Kenya on the Miss Universe stage, taking on the responsibility of showcasing the country's culture, talent and values before a global audience.

In recent years, international pageantry has continued to evolve beyond traditional beauty contests, placing greater emphasis on advocacy, public speaking and social impact. Bellwood said this year's winner reflects the direction Miss Universe Kenya hopes to continue championing.

"Ojiro's win reflects the modern direction of Miss Universe Kenya, which places equal emphasis on intelligence, advocacy, leadership, and cultural representation alongside beauty," he said. "She embodies the shift toward empowered women who are not only visible on stage but also active in their communities."

The organization also views the competition as an important contributor to Kenya's wider creative economy. By bringing together designers, stylists, photographers, makeup artists and other industry professionals, the pageant provides a national platform that extends beyond the contestants themselves while helping elevate Kenyan fashion and beauty on an international stage.

As part of her reign, Ojiro will undergo months of preparation before departing for the international Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico, later this year in November. Her training will include public speaking, media preparation, advocacy development and cultural presentation, with Crown Culture Africa providing mentorship and support throughout her journey to the international competition.
