Fashion weeks have, since forever, functioned as cozy bubbles, or more aptly, alternate realities, providing a pause from the flurry of banal activities that define everyday life. To quote Karl Lagerfeld: “The world of luxury is another world from that of daily life.” Nonetheless, a few weeks every year, we get to fleetingly immerse ourselves in this world of luxury; either vicariously through social media content or by experiencing fashion week in person. The just-concluded spring/summer edition of NYFW, however, unfolded against a fraught political landscape, and as such, for many, it fell short of its characteristic escapist charm. An article released earlier this week by Danya Issawai for The Cut pulls apart the stark dichotomy between the glamour of NYFW and the cruelty of our current political landscape. In the piece, she speaks to fashion editors “about opting out (or thinking about it) of this year’s New York Fashion Week,” all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, for fear of retribution from the U.S government.
Despite this sombre backdrop, NYFW unspooled without incident and, in usual fashion, served up an assortment of breathtaking looks, many of which might inspire your next look.
